We are hip hop. You are. I am... We are. Therefore we must embrace our culture as we do our jobs, our health, and our family. Our commitment to our own success must also include a commitment to our culture. This project was started first and foremost from a love of music. A deep, powerful, appreciation of what all music offers, and a respect for the culture we call Hip hop. In the current mixtape happy world of rap music with its focus on new, new, new and now, now, now, our culture seems to have been lost or at least driven very far "underground." We attempt to reverse this trend and shine a light on the Hip hop we all know and love. We dust off those hits from back in the day, pull out those tracks that may not have been on the radio, and celebrate the messages that are too often forgotten.

We combine our celebration of the finest in all music, with critical thought spoken by scholars, activists, and thinkers. These words are almost never heard in mainstream media.
|
We give you a chance to reflect on what you have listened to with critical questions that we must ask ourselves and begin to discuss with our comrades in Hip hop.

You will also find links and references to print material that will allow you to read further on these issues. |
These aren't your ordinary mixtapes! That is why we call them mixtexts. You are not being force fed the new "hot joint" from DJ TakeYourMoney. You are first given the chance to jam to great music, but you can also embrace the richness of this art form by exploring the important social issues and concerns of all people, particularly people of color.
